Dear reader,
The promotion of fish welfare should be a task for society as a whole. That is why we all need to scrutinise our fish consumption. Especially in countries that do not rely on fishes for food security, such as Switzerland and partly Europe, we should eat much less fishes, and if, only from sources that fully respect fish welfare. Why? On the one hand, we must stop the threatening overfishing of marine stocks and allow fish populations to recover. And on the other hand: only if people on fishing vessels and in aquaculture have to deal with fewer animals at a time is it possible to focus on fish welfare in practice. |

fair-fish database
The freely accessible fair-fish database brings together as much knowledge as possible about the welfare of edible fishes in the wild, in aquaculture, and when caught. The fisheries section of the fair-fish database is online following extensive reporting and development work. Along the catching process, the database contains scientific findings on animal welfare - for a specific species caught using a specific method. Suggestions for improvement are also provided: https://fair-fish-database.net/ |

Conferences
We organise and participate in conferences: This year we organised the fifth edition of the Summer Shoal, together with our partners from the Carefish/catch project. The Summer Shoal 2023 was not a conference in the usual sense, but a two-day stakeholder meeting of 40 people in a large circle under the open sky, in the shade of pine trees. Time for a fruitful and intensive exchange on fish welfare between people from fisheries, aquaculture, retail, consumption, science, certification, NGOs, and politics. And we took part in the first conference of the Catch Welfare Platform. This brought together 130 people from the fishing industry, science, NGOs, and retail. This is how pragmatic solutions for improving animal welfare in fisheries are developed. We need your help so that we can continue to work for the welfare of fishes in fisheries and aquaculture! |

AAC report
Fish welfare may become part of EU legislative framework! The Aquaculture Advisory Council (AAC) has published a recommendation on using ethology, an understanding of fish behaviour, to improve fish welfare within aquaculture. The official recommendation is fully based on the AAC report «Using Ethology to Improve Farmed Fish Welfare and Production», a study about welfare, in which fair-fish was involved. See the recommendation here. |
