The Carefish/catch project aims to improve standards for less animal suffering in fisheries. To this end, scientists are identifying suitable measures. The project consortium, of which fair-fish is a member, recently published recommendations on fishing with pots and traps. Trials were carried out in Portuguese octopus fisheries, as an example of the southern European artisanal fishing industry. Conclusion: To reduce the suffering of the animals, spraying them with bleach, a widely used method to facilitate their removal from traps, should be banned since it causes painful burns to the animals' bodies, especially the eyes. In addition, the animals should be stunned and killed immediately, preferably by a trained member of the crew. The recommended practice is to make an incision in the brain with a sharp, pointed object (such as a knife). You can download the report here. |
